La Crete Community Library has been in operation since 1962. (Committee minutes are on file at the library and date back to January 30, 1962). We were first housed in a small building across the street from La Crete Public School. Mrs. Martha Nafziger spearheaded the birth of the LaCrete Community Library.
When the Public School was completed in 1977, La Crete Community Library became a joint library with Fort Vermilion School Division No.52. After 24 years of residency in the school, the library was temporarily moved to a seperate building on the school property during extensive school renovations from May 2001 to April 2002. The library was squeezed into a small, cramped portable while waiting for construction to be completed. April brought the move back into the public school to offer a better enviroment for its patrons.
